He made his debut in the third Daytona 500 in a Chevrolet owned and prepared by brother-in-law Richard Stark and had double reasons to celebrate. Wife Judy presented him with his first child, David Carl on Thursday after Bobby finished 20th in the qualifying race. He returned from his Hollywood, FL, home just hours before the start of the 1961 Daytona 500, where he finished 31st in the 58-car field. He went on to start 718 Winston Cup events, winning 59 poles and 85 races in a career that ended with injuries from a Pocono crash in l988. He was the l983 Winston Cup champion and six-time Most Popular Driver in the series.
