One of the biggest stars in the world of stock car racing pioneers, Elzie Wylie Baker (wonder why he is called "Buck"?) traded his job as a Charlotte city bus driver for a chance at stock car racing - and became one of the greatest of all time. Born March 4, 1919 in Charlotte, NC, Buck ran his first two Grand National events in 1949. He became the first driver in history to win back-to-back championships (1956-'57) and did it in two different makes of car (Chrysler and then Chevrolet). He was the top lap and mileage driver for three straight years
