Born into a racing family, there was no doubt where Elzie Wylie "Buddy" Baker, Jr. was headed. Although he was born January 25, 1941 in South Carolina, Buddy was raised in Charlotte - when he was home from the races, that is. He spent much of his youth working on his dad's race car and changing tires during pit stops as his father won twin championships. After high school, Buddy started driving race cars and fought his way up through the ranks. He drove one of his father's cars in his l959 debut at Columbia, SC where he started 18th and finished 14th. He
