Born March 12, 1915 in Boulder, CO, Robert "Red" Byron moved to Anniston, AL at an early age. He began racing in 1932 in unorganized races at a little known track in Talladega, AL and did his own car preparation at a garage he owned. He served as a tail gunner on 57 missions in a B-24 during World War II and was shot down over Kikta in the Aleutian Islands during his 58th mission.
