He drove with his left leg in a steel stirrup bolted to the clutch in a car owned by Raymond Parks - and won, beating the likes of Roy Hall, Mad Marion McDonald, Bob and Fonty Flock and Bill France. Byron then turned to the Daytona beach-road course in April and ran to victory. He won the NASCAR Modified national championship in 1947 and the following year, became the first NASCAR Strictly Stock champion.
