Born September 21, 1945 in Winston-Salem, NC, Richard Childress wasn't always the multi-team owner and successful businessman he now is. At one time, he bought purses in Mexico and sold them in the Riverside garage area to help finance his independent entries in the California road race. Many remember when he had a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter in his transporter to serve as lunch for the pick-up crew that serviced his cars at the track.
