Some knew him as Darel, some knew him as a winner, but a few close friends knew him as "Daddy Ding-A-Ling" because of his screwball antics. Born in Indianapolis, on June 1, 1926, Darel came from the Midwest bullrings to Grand National racing in 1957. Happy-go-lucky except when he belted into race cars, Dieringer won 11 poles and seven races during his career. Some of the wins were on short tracks, but the one victory he treasured most was taking Bud Moore's Mercury to victory in the 1966 Southern 500 at Darlington, when he beat Richard Petty,
