Carolinas and Virginia. Although he made occasional forays into Grand National competition, he preferred the Sportsman competition because he was doing well enough to support his family. He made his Grand National debut at the four-tenths mile Hickory Speedway for the November 11 race with a factory-backed Ford fielded by DePaolo Racing. He merely slapped the Ford on the pole and then led the race before finally yielding to Alfred "Speedy" Thompson in one of Carl Kiekhaefer's white Chrysler 300s.
