He watched as his son, Dale, began his progress through the ranks but did not live to see Dale make his Winston Cup debut. Ralph died Sept. 26, 1973 of a heart attack while working on his car in the shop behind his home. Ralph is a member of both the National Motorsports Press Association and International Motorsports Halls of Fame.
