drove a Cotton Owens prepared Pontiac and led the qualifying race before Richard Petty went on to victory. He watched as his son, Dale, began his progress through the ranks but did not live to see Dale make his Winston Cup debut. Ralph died Sept. 26, 1973 of a heart attack while working on his car in the shop behind his home. Ralph is a member of both the National Motorsports Press Association and International Motorsports Halls of Fame.
